COGNITIVE ASSESSMENTS FOR ADULTS & CHILDREN A cognitive assessment investigates strengths and weaknesses in how someones brain works; including verbal comprehension, memory, processing speed, reasoning, visual and spatial abilities, academic performance and the ability to function independently in the world.
Cognitive assessments enable psychologists to diagnose intellectual disability, and learning disorders including Dyslexia, Dyscalculia & Dysgraphia or giftedness.
Results are often utilised to inform the adjustments required to support a child or adult in the education or workplace setting. They may also be used to support application for NDIS assistance.
At the conclusion of our assessment service a comprehensive written report is provided during a feedback session where results are discussed in plain language. If applicable, completion of the practitioners, section of the NDIS Access Request Form is also provided. All assessment services are currently completed by Janelle Nichols. Wait time is generally 6 weeks. Enquiries to [email protected]
ASSESSING INTELLIGENCE , GIFTEDNESS & INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY Assessments of intelligence involve the use of highly regarded standardised and normed assessment tools developed by Wechsler. Subtests measure auditory and visual working memory, the ability to reason, verbal comprehension, processing speed and visual spatial abilities
The WISC V or WAIS IV generally takes 45-60 minutes.
Tasks are completed via a combination of iPad, hands on and pencil and paper format.
Participants/parents also complete a questionnaire about developmental history.
The process identifies intellectual strengths, challenges and learning styles.
Giftedness is tested with the WISC V (children) or WAIS IV (adults).
Intellectual disability (ID) is tested with the WISC V (children) or WAIS IV (adults) & the ABAS III. The process to diagnose ID is more involved. This is because an assessment of Adaptive Behaviour (ABAS) is required to confirm diagnosis.
If ID is confirmed, participants will be eligble for the NDIS.
ASSESSING LEARNING DISABILITIES : DYSELXIA, DYSCALCULIA & DYSGRAPHIA. Learning disabilities (e.g., Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia) are now collectively called Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD).
People with SLD's generally have average or above average IQ but their performance on specific academic tasks like, reading, maths, or writing, being significantly lower than expected.
To assess a learning disability in children both a WISC V (IQ assessment) and WIAT III (academic assessment) are required.
To assess a learning disability in adults both a WAIS V (IQ assessment) and WIAT III (academic performance) are required.
An IQ assessment is required to rule out Intellectual Disability.
Even though an SLD can cause significant impairment in specific areas of learning. Diagnosis of an SLD does not provide eligibility for the NDIS.
We utilise the following evidence-based standardised instruments : WAIS IV: The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale is a Cognitive Assessment used to identify an adults Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and is used in conjunction with the ABAS to assess intellectual disability. WISC V : The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children is a Cognitive Assessment used to identify a child's Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and is used in conjunction with the ABAS to assess intellectual disability. WIAT III: The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test is a Children's Performance and Learning assessment, used in conjunction with the WISC V to aid diagnosis of Specific Learning Disabilities (e.g. dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia). ABAS III: The Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System is used to assess functional capacity when investigating intellectual abilities and limitations.
REDUCED FEE OPTIONS FOR PRIVATE CLIENTS Private clients are clients who are not accessing insurance or a third party to fund the assessment.
Initial consultation and screening: $200
The initial consultation helps identify which Level assessment is needed. If proceeding this fee is deducted from the total fee.
Level 2 Diagnostic Assessment: WISC or WAIS and WIAT III or WISC or WAIS and ABAS. Fee : $2100
Used to identify Specific Learning Disabilities (e.g., Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia) or Intellectual disabilities
Level 3 Comprehensive Assessment: WISC or WAIS plus the WIAT III and ABAS III, the fee is $3000
Used to investigate complex and borderline presentation. To rule in/out diagnosis and to ascertain adaptive functioning and IQ.
FEE APPLICABLE FOR THIRD PARTIES Third Party payers and insutrance companies are charged at the recommended AAPI rate. The standard rate $315 per hour. An estimate for each assessment level is; Level 1; $3000, Level 2: $4000 Level 5: $4500. Fees confirmed in service agreement prior to provision of service.
ATTENTION DEFICIT & HYPERACTIVITY DISORDERS Assessing ADHD and making a diagnosis aligned with DSM 5 diagnostic requirements is an involved process. It entails gathering background information on development, family history and observational information about behaviour across settings. When children are assessed we gather information from parents/carers and school using the Connors protocol. When adults are assessed a self-report is completed using the ASRS protocol. Participants also complete a computerised test of continuous performance using the MOXO-CPT protocol; this provides objective measures of attention, hyperactivity, timeliness and impulsivity.
BELOW IS A LIST OF REDUCED FEE OPTIONS FOR PRIVATE CLIENTS NOT USING INSURANCE
$1200: This fee includes clinical interview, observational assesment, Continuous Performance Testing, report writing and report feedback session.
$2800: This fee includes a Cogntive Assessment (to investigate IQ and learning difficulties) and ADHD assessment as otlined above.
Insurance Rates: Applicable rates apply, quoted on an hourly rate at the NDIS rate or $315 per hour, as per AAPI recommended rate for psychology. Fee is confirmed prior to service.
