Janelle Nichols - Psychologist & Director

Janelle Nichols  is the founder and director of Huon Valley Psychology. Janelle has worked  within the Huon Valley community for  almost fifteen years, providing support to  adults, adolescents, and children.  She is a caring and empathetic psychologist who welcomes people from all  backgrounds. Anxiety, depression, trauma, self-development, children’s development, and attachment-based parenting  are a strong focus of Janelle’s professional work.   Janelle’s  approachable manner  enables clients to feel relaxed whilst engaging in therapy. The aims of therapy are developed in consultation with clients,  and  Janelle draws from an extensive range of evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, Mindfulness, and Play Therapy.   Janelle  also provides services under the NDIS and through EAP referrals. In addition, Janelle enjoys the complex and interesting process of completing sensitive cognitive assessments including diagnosis of intellectual and adaptive functioning,  and personality assessments for adults and children.

 Janelle began her Psychology degree in 2004, completing Honours in 2008 and then undertook  an internship  to become fully registered in 2014.   Janelle can be contacted on 9-5 Mondays and Thursdays.

 Bethany Smith - Clinical Psychologist

Bethany is a caring and compassionate registered Clinical Psychologist with 10 years experience working with adults and adolescents.  Bethany believes that person-centred therapy, with a focus on building rapport and trust, is essential to assist people reach their goals. Bethany draws upon several evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, in her work to understand the complex issues people face in life. Bethany uses strategies from these approaches to assist her clients to build upon their skills and address their needs in therapy.    Bethany has experience providing care and support to people with the following concerns:
  • Mood issues including, depression and adjustment to challenging life situations
  • Anxiety and stress management
  • Self esteem
  • Grief and loss
  • Experiences of trauma
  • Managing chronic health conditions, including diabetes, chronic heart and lung disease, and pain management
  • Anger management
  • Transgender and other identity based issues
Bethany aims to support her clients to improve their coping skills and self-regulation of emotions, to better understand their relationships, and to learn about the links between their thoughts, feelings and actions.
Bethany studied at the University of Adelaide and completed her Master of Psychology (Health) in 2009. Since then Bethany has worked in government, not for profit organisations, and private practice in Melbourne and Hobart, including:
  • The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (Melbourne)
  • Southern Health (Melbourne, hospital setting)
  • Relationships Australia Tasmania
  • headspace Hobart (youth focus)
Bethany has experience in leadership and supervision, and currently supervises Provisional Psychologists in training at the University of Tasmania Psychology Clinic.  Bethany is a Psychology Board approved supervisor (Clinical).

Interventions applied in Irene's practice include CBT, Emotional Expressive Therapies, Mindfulness, Narrative Therapy, Problem Solving,    Solution-focused Therapy, and Interpersonal approaches using applied Systems Theory. Complimentary   therapies   include Art Therapy, Dream work, Creative Visualisation, and Taoist esoteric counselling.
Irene is the author  of   the   Relaxercise   stress management community based program, and Three R's - Resourced, Recovered, Resilient, a self-directed, therapist independent multi-psychotherapy depression treatment and relapse prevention program that can be delivered in groups or individually online. The program applies adult education, learning and feedback principles for greater effectiveness and for research purposes.

Irene has been in private practice for over 15 years, and endorses the Power-Threat-Meaning Framework of the British Psychology Society (Clinical Division).  Initially trained as an artist, Irene subsequently taught in primary, secondary schools and adult education. An interest in innovative education led to the position of Coordinator, Blue Mountains Community School, Counsellor with the Australian Schools Commission Innovations Program, and Coordinator of Brisbane Independent School. Studies in Jungian, transpersonal and spiritual, and facilitating personal growth groups led to academic psychology training, and certificates in Gestalt Therapy and Family Therapy.

​Felicity Massey - Counsellor

Felicity is a warm and competent professional with 20+ years experience working to make a difference in people’s lives.  She welcomes diversity in all its wonderful forms and seeks to provide a safe and inclusive space for all.   Felicity will work with you to identify your unique strengths and to develop skills and processes that will help you get ‘unstuck’ and moving forward again in a positive and uplifting way.  She believes that the world is a far nicer place when we approach, not only each other, but ourselves with openness, acceptance and loving-kindness and will help you find the path back to that place and to reframe the challenges that you are experiencing. 

She draws from a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy; Internal Family Systems (‘Parts’ therapy); Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction; Emotionally Focused Therapy; CBT; as well as Gottman Therapy when working with couples.  
 She offers individual counselling for adults, children and teens, as well as counselling for couples at any stage of relationship, including pre-marital, older couples and anything in-between!  She is available on Mondays and Fridays from 8.30am, as well as some Saturdays if needed.
 Felicity received her Honours in Psychology in 1996 and more recently completed her Masters in Counselling from Monash University.  She is a member of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).

​​Anna Hopwood - Counsellor

Anna is a registered counsellor and lifelong resident of the Huon Valley, with a deep commitment to the wellbeing of all people in our local community. She enjoys working with clients of any age and is particularly skilled in supporting those who may find it difficult to seek help, and are concerned that nobody will understand the struggles they face. Anna provides therapy that can help to alleviate feelings of shame and self-criticism. She offers clients gentle support, fostering the ability to recover from and overcome obstacles, to thrive and find contentment.
Anna completed a bachelor of arts with majors in psychology and philosophy in 2010, a graduate diploma in counselling in 2014, and is now in the process of completing an honours year in psychology. Her work draws on the combined knowledge of these disciplines, with a strong commitment to connected and flexible client focused therapy, underpinned by the principles of psychological science. Anna uses a range of techniques and approaches depending on client need and preference, including Rogerian counselling, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Mindfulness. She has training and particular interest in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), a trauma sensitive therapy that has many applications and particular benefit for people who experience depression that has not responded easily to other treatments. Anna is a member of the   Compassionate Mind Foundation. Currently, she is the only therapist in Tasmania providing dedicated CFT.
